Tess Jaray: Paintings and Drawings Across 60 Years opens at the Millenium Gallery, Sheffield

A survey exhibition of works by Tess Jaray opens tomorrow at the Millenium Gallery in Sheffield. The exhibition presents paintings and drawings from all periods of Jaray's career, alongside sketchbooks and reference material from her studio which shed light on her inspirations and influences.

This will be Jaray's second solo exhibition in the city; the first, Tess Jaray: Paintings and Prints 1967-72, opened at the Graves Art Gallery in April 1972. Arranged by the influential director Frank Constantine, the show comprised 23 paintings and 26 prints and subsequently toured to Bristol City Art Gallery. The earliest work in the exhibition, Minuet, was given to the gallery at the time of the show, becoming part of an important regional collection of 20th century British art. Later, in 1988, Jaray's work was included in the touring exhibition The Presence of Painting: Aspects of British Abstraction 1957-1988, which opened at Sheffield's Mappin Gallery before travelling to Newcastle and Birmingham.
