This painting is based on recollections of two trips to Switzerland in 1933 and 1935. The setting is Sass Grund with the Stations of the Cross situated on the old footpath to Saas Fe. During his 1935 stay in Zermatt, Spencer saw goats being herded past his hotel. (Tate 1955 exh cat).
