Paolozzi's interest in chrome-plated steel as a material for his work emerged in 1964, inspired by his visits to the 'Alpha Engineering Works' in Ipswich where he was then making aluminium pieces. Although the chrome pieces have been compared to minimalist sculpture their reflective surfaces, which react with their surroundings in such a lively manner, are in strong contrast to the neutral materials used by minimalists Judd and Morris.
